Abstract:
While mathematics has been at the heart of the foundations of modern artificial intelligence, this talk will explore how modern AI—and, more specifically, large language models and agentic AI—is now beginning to transform the practice of mathematics itself. After a brief overview of the principles underlying modern large language models, I will discuss how their integration with formal verification tools and proof assistants is making it possible to solve an increasing range of mathematical problems, including some that have long been regarded as particularly challenging. I will then present several recent initiatives and emerging trends that point toward a new paradigm for conducting mathematical research and, more broadly, for teaching and learning mathematics in the years to come.
