Institute of Computer Science, Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas

Scientific Director, EONOS Investment Technologies – Paris, France

George Tzagkarakis received the Ph.D. and M.Sc. degrees (First in Class, Honors) from the Computer Science Department (CSD) at the University of Crete (UΟC), Greece, in 2009 and 2004, respectively, and the B.Sc. degree in Mathematics from the Department of Mathematics (UΟC) in 2002 (First in Class, Honors). A number of academic distinctions have been awarded to him both as an undergraduate and a postgraduate student from UΟC, the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH), as well as from external state foundations.

Between 2001 and 2010 he collaborated with FORTH as a research assistant, during his undergraduate and postgraduate studies, participating in various projects in the fields of signal and image processing. From 2010 to 2012 he was affiliated with CEA/Saclay, France, as a Marie Curie post-doctoral researcher in the Cosmology and Statistics Laboratory, working on the design and implementation of compressive sensing algorithms for remote imaging in areal and terrestrial surveillance systems.

Since 2012, he holds a research position in EONOS Investment Technologies, Paris, France, where he now serves as the company’s Scientific Director, being responsible for developing and managing scientific research projects strategically aligned with the state-of-the-art in quantitative analysis, econometrics, and computational finance using advanced signal and data processing methodologies.

In the period 2012-2016 he was an external collaborator of the Signal Processing Laboratory (SPL) at FORTH-ICS, where he now serves as a principal researcher.

His research interests lie in the fields of statistical signal and image processing, with emphasis in:
    Non-Gaussian heavy-tailed modeling
Compressive sensing and sparse representations, with applications in signal, image and video processing
Computational finance, econometrics and operations research
Distributed signal processing in sensor networks
Information theory, with applications in image classification and retrieval
    Inverse problems in underwater acoustics

    Selected Projects:

    • The PHYSIS project (2015-2017)
    • The HYDROBIONETS project (2011-2014)
    • The CS-ORION project (2010-2014)
